VIRUSES BACTERIA AND PARASITES IN OUR DRINKING WATER
Bacteria are everywhere in our environment. We live with both non harmful and harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites (collectively called pathogens) on a daily basis. Some can make you ill and some will pass through your body with no effect whatsoever – without you even knowing that they have even made a visit!
We take our drinking water for granted. We turn on a tap and fill a jug or glass and enjoy refreshing water. Our drinking water is treated to kill harmful bacteria and to keep water germ free on its journey to our taps. The use of chlorine is the most common method of disinfection, but it can react with certain naturally occurring organic compounds. However, there are times when we wonder if our drinking water is as safe as we expect it to be. Or when we want to be 100% sure that it is as purse as it possibly can be (without living in a scientific laboratory environment). When we are looking to ensure that our drinking water is free of pathogens and other nasties that might make us ill?
The answer is in Reverse Osmosis (RO). Reverse Osmosis Systems have a very high effectiveness in removing viruses (for example, Enteric, Hepatitis A, Norovirus, Rotavirus).
Reverse Osmosis is a special type of filtration that uses a semi-permeable, thin membrane with pores small enough to pass pure water through while rejecting larger molecules such as bacteria and dissolved salts (ions).
Reverse Osmosis works by reversing the principal of osmosis, the tendency of water to flow through a membrane from lower to higher salt concentration. The result is highly purified water. Pure H2O.
This simple process has many applications, including not only highly technical food and drink processes but also where there is a medical or dental need to be using the purest water. RO technology also has a place in domestic settings where the water supply is insufficiently pure enough for consumers.
It is widely recognised that RO systems have a very high effectiveness in removing viruses from water
